![]() The belief that people in 1492 thought the world was flat is a myth, blamed on Washington Irving's 1828 historical fiction/biography of Columbus. Not a well researched book: Fairly early in a young girl talks about how Columbus has this theory that the world is round and 'isn't that silly, because we know the world is flat!' ![]() The book also includes Columbus's sailing, and the father of the family is a court physician who is sent by the Queen to inspect the crew before they sail. The story is told from the perspective of their maid, a catholic girl orphaned by a recent plague, who is placed with the 'conversos' by a priest in order to spy on them for the church. In spite of this the church does not 'trust' they are really catholic and they are hunted by the beginnings of the inquisition. Enjoyable read but historically inaccurate: Spain 1492, expulsion of Jews, beginnings of the inquisition & Columbus sails: the focus is on a 'coversos' catholic family who 100 years before had converted from being Jews. ![]()
